What is style? - - TrendGiveAfuck

I’m taking classes in communication and oral presentation, and recently I did a speech on the benefits of style. Writing the speech forced me to really dig in to this topic and think about why style is important. I found several good reasons for finding your own style and putting it on display, but for now I just want to share a really nice quote by American author Gore Vidal.

“Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn.”

New Look – Be the trend27 Apr 2010

New Look – Be the trend - - TrendGiveAfuck

New Look posts these ads little here and there in London, telling you to be the trend by buying their simple outfits.

I found this ironic.

Why? First, you are not starting a trend by buying something that already exists, you are following one.

Second, many, many people seem to think that the words “trend” or “fashion” go together with “uniqueness”.

Fashion is a general term for the style and custom prevalent at a given time (Wikipedia), a Trend is a line of general direction of movement, a line of development, a prevailing tendency or inclination, an emerging style or preference, or the general movement over time of a statistically detectable change. In short, “trend” is a synonym of “tendency”. (Wikipedia).

That is, neither means that you have your personal style. The only way of “being a trend” is to be a “trend setter”, but in a way, even that is a paradox, for having trend followers in a way kills your own style. We at TrendGiveAfuck will have a problem with this in the future, but we will minimise this problem by continue wearing ANYTHING :)

The secret to happiness17 Apr 2010

The secret to happiness - - TrendGiveAfuck

Why do we have TrendGiveAfuck? The answer is not the same as to the question why did we create TrendGiveAfuck. We created TrendGiveAfuck because we were so damn tired of the club scene and nightlife in Stockholm in 2008, so we just wanted to do something different and mock the whole scene.

Today I would say TrendGiveAfuck tries to achieve two things, besides the obvious reason that two late-bloomers still want to have a reason to go out and get dirty and have fun.

ONE: What if we could affect people to dress a little bit more colourful (not as in reflections of light even though that is really really nice as well, but as in “show your true colours”-colours) and drop the guard for a while. We don’t have to follow trends, and we don’t have to belong to a genre or group style-wise. I think we would all be a bit happier.

TWO: What if we could make people believe in themselves, and realize that style adds to your self confidence (charismatic people will always be appreciated, and appreciated people will always grow self confidence). And by believing in yourself, your potential, and striving to be the person you really want to be, I think you will be a happier person.

Both Adorian and I have been doing this for over a year now, and boy have we grown! I’m glad to say that we are the living proof that this works.

WeAreHandsome.com – unique retro swim wear - - TrendGiveAfuck

I’m not too swimsuits usually, but I wouldn’t mind my girl wearing one of WeAreHandsome’s swim wear. They are all handmade in limited quantity, so you can be sure not many other girls will have the same outfit as you. I also like their view on uniqueness:

“We want you to feel special, unique and amazing when wearing one of our pieces. We want you to rest assured that you’ll never see someone with the same outfit on, we want you to turn heads, to get people pointing. We want you to feel handsome – in every sense of the word.”

Now for some cool outfits for us boys, aight?

Momchil Hristov’s Alice31 Mar 2010

Momchil Hristov’s Alice - - TrendGiveAfuck

Lewis Carroll’s Alice was just dull.

Tim Burton’s Alice was colourful, but not so “TimBurtony” (and not very engaging either, I’m sad to say).

American McGee’s Alice is almost more like a Tim Burton movie, though it’s a 1st person computer game. With a dark story, Alice has blood stains on her apron and goth black boots.

Momchil Hristov’s Alice (picture above), however, has never been so beautiful and so stylish. The same goes to all other strange creatures. Click here for more amazing photographs.

Spanish photographer Reclarkgable has sampled looks and lifestyles of today.

Stereotypical, but pretty cool collection! What goes inside the heads of these couples? Are there any missing stereotypes? Which girl or guy are you?

I’m definitely the one in the middle. And so will my girl ^_^

John Malkovich trendgiveafucks! - - TrendGiveAfuck

Christopher Bastin och John Malkovich at a party last month.

Johnny’s jacket is extraordinary! He is wearing a sofa and has a strange Italian collar on his shirt. Too bad about the red sweater, though. He should also do something with his hair if he doesn’t want to be mistaken for Doc.
